A Call for Peaceful, Fair, and God-Guided Participation

Educating Citizens on the Upcoming General Elections – A Call for Peaceful, Fair, and God-Guided Participation

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ and Fellow Zambians,

As Faith Voices under Fair Vote Zambia 2026, we are called by our shared values of justice, peace, and unity to guide our nation towards elections that honour God's will for harmony and righteousness. The 2026 General Elections, scheduled for 13 August 2026, will elect the President, 156 Members of Parliament (MPs) from constituencies across our beloved country, as well as local councillors and mayors/council chairpersons.

In these times of political activity, we urge all Zambians to pray for wisdom, reject violence, and embrace dialogue. Let us remember the words of Scripture: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God" (Matthew 5:9). Fair and peaceful elections are a blessing from God, allowing us to choose leaders who serve the common good.

Understanding the Political Landscape as of January 2026

Zambia is blessed with a multi-party democracy, where many voices can contribute to national development. While over a dozen political parties are active, the elections will likely feature a few major contenders fielding candidates for President, MPs, and councillors. Many parties may form alliances to unite efforts, as we have seen with endorsements and pacts calling for one strong opposition voice.

Key Contenders and Likely Presidential Candidates:

- United Party for National Development (UPND)

President: Hakainde Hichilema (Incumbent President, expected to seek re-election)

The ruling party, currently holding the majority of seats in Parliament.

- Patriotic Front (PF)

A major opposition party with significant representation in the current National Assembly.

-Socialist Party

  President: Dr. Fred M'membe

Recently selected as the presidential candidate for the People's Pact, an emerging alliance including the Green Party and others focused on unity against division.

Other active parties, such as the Party of National Unity and Progress (PNUP), Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD), Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), and New Heritage Party, may field candidates or join broader alliances. Smaller parties and independents will also participate, enriching our democracy.

Alliances like the People's Pact demonstrate a growing call for opposition unity, which we pray will be guided by humility and the greater good of Zambia, free from bitterness.

#Seats to be Contested in 2026

- President: One national leader, elected directly by the people (requiring over 50% of votes for outright victory).

- Members of Parliament (MPs): 156 elected seats (one per constituency) + 8 nominated by the President + ex-officio members = total around 167 in the National Assembly.

- Councillors: Thousands of ward councillors across Zambia's districts, along with mayors and council chairpersons, ensuring local voices are heard in governance.

Many parties will field candidates for MPs and councillors in constituencies and wards nationwide, though major parties like UPND and those in alliances are expected to contest the most seats.

A Prayerful Appeal for Peaceful Elections

As Faith Voices, we remind all political leaders, parties, and supporters: Zambia is one nation under God. Avoid words or actions that incite division or violence. Let campaigns focus on issues – economic justice, education, health, and care for the vulnerable – rather than personal attacks.

We call on:

- All parties to commit to the Electoral Code of Conduct.

- Citizens to register to vote (when the period opens and participate prayerfully.

- Leaders to seek God's guidance in building a Zambia where peace reigns.

- We call on teachers to begin sanitizing none voting citizen (especially school children to keep away from matters related elections.

Let us unite in prayer for free, fair, and credible elections in 2026. May the Holy Spirit guide our choices towards leaders who promote unity, justice, and prosperity for all.

In peace and faith,
