God Is With You When You Are With Him

God Is With You When You Are With Him

There is a verse in the middle of the history of Judah that cuts through every season of life with striking clarity: “The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you” (2 Chronicles 15:2).

These words were spoken to a victorious king. Asa had just watched God crush an army far larger than his own. The natural temptation after such a triumph would be to celebrate, relax, and assume the favor would continue automatically. Instead, God sent a prophet with a sober reminder: My presence is not automatic. It is relational.

This truth still stands. Many of us want the comfort of knowing God is with us—especially in crisis, decision-making, or loneliness—yet we treat relationship with Him as optional or secondary. We want the benefits of His nearness without the posture of seeking. Scripture will not let us have it both ways.

Being “with Him” is not primarily about perfect performance. It is about orientation of the heart. It means turning toward God rather than away, seeking Him rather than ignoring Him, clinging to Him rather than replacing Him with lesser trusts. When we seek Him—through prayer that is honest, Scripture that is opened, repentance that is real, and obedience that is practical—He promises to be found. He is not playing hide-and-seek. He delights to be known by those who genuinely want Him.

The warning is equally clear. Forsaking Him does not mean God ceases to exist or suddenly becomes unloving. It means we step out from under the practical experience of His nearness and protection. Distance grows. Clarity fades. Strength drains. The history of Israel is full of seasons like that—times when the people lived “without the true God… without a teaching priest and without law,” and the result was turmoil (2 Chronicles 15:3). Yet even then, the door remained open: when they sought Him in their distress, He let them find Him.

This principle does not cancel the New Testament promises of God’s constant love and the Spirit’s indwelling. Jesus is Immanuel—“God with us”—and He has promised to be with His people to the end of the age (Matthew 1:23; 28:20). The Holy Spirit lives in every believer. Yet the same relational dynamic remains: we experience the power, peace, and guidance of that presence most fully when we walk with Him rather than against Him or apart from Him. Abiding in the vine is still required for fruitfulness (John 15). Drawing near is still met with drawing near (James 4:8).

So the invitation is simple and searching. Where are you positioned today? Are you with Him—seeking, listening, yielding—or have lesser things quietly taken His place? The good news is that the same God who spoke through Azariah still responds to sincere seeking. He is not far. He is ready to be found.

Return. Seek Him with your whole heart. Stay with Him. And discover again the profound security of the promise: the Lord is with you when you are with Him.
